Facebook will end on January 15th 2013: The Truth

Facebook closingAnother Facebook closing down news is taking rounds: Facebook will end on January 15th 2013.
FACEBOOK WILL END ON JANUARY 15TH, 2013!

ALO ALTO, CA – Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in January. Managing the site has become too stressful.

“Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”

The news is spread by Weeklyworldnews.com, a site known for distributing fanciful stories disguised as news articles. Other stories published by Weekly World News are alien stories and other otherworldly and tabloid stories.

The news of social networking giant Facebook shutting down is not new. People, for example, have spread news about Facebook closing down on March 15, 2011 and then July 2012 but the close down never happened because the claims are not true.

How to Play with Other SimCity Social Players without Compromising Your Privacy

The much awaited SimCity update has arrived and it's on Facebook. What makes SimCity social more enjoyable and more addictive is you actually get to play with friends. With the Simcity championships, you also get to compete with other players. Nonetheless, completing some quests, building attractions, factories and businesses, and expanding your land area require that you have plenty of friends who can send you collectibles and land permits.  If you only have a few friends and you can't wait to build new buildings or complete quests, you might be tempted to add Simcity social players that you do not personally know of and who are similarly looking for simcity players that they can also play with.

Where to Find Simcity Social Players
If you consider to do add people you do not personally know of so you can play simcity social, you can easily find people asking you to add them up and play with them on the simcity social official forum and fan page.

Remember to:

  • Carefully choose who to add. When adding people, check their profile and try to get a gauge if they really are simcity players and if they are safe enough to add up.

  • Introduce yourself when adding people up. "I'm a simcity player and I am looking for people to play with" will do.

Protecting Your Privacy
Make sure to limit these people's access to information you post on Facebook. To do this:

  • Add simcity social players to the Restricted friend's list. People on this list can only see posts and profile information you have decided to make public.

  • Check your Privacy settings-->Control Your Default Privacy and make sure that your default post is only visible to friends. You may also want to

  • Update your chat privacy settings. Go to chat sidebar-->Advanced chat settings. Under "All your friends see you except", add Restricted list.

  • Make sure to review the people you have add up regularly and remove spammy and suspicious friends.

Your Amazon.com Password has Been Changed Email

Your Amazon.com Password has Been Changed Email: Did It Come from Amazon?
Did you receive a message that says Amazon.com changed your password? If yes, you can verify if the email is real by trying to log into your Amazon account. Make sure that you do not click on the link that is attached to your email. Instead, go to your browser and type in the Amazon's url.

If you find that the claims of the email is false and you have likely received a phishing email, make sure to mark the email message as spam. Below is how you do it if you are using gmail:

Your Amazon.com Password has Been Changed Email: Did It Come from Amazon?

This is an important message from Amazon.com

As a precaution, we've reset your Amazon.com password because you may have been subject to a "phishing" scam.

Here's how phishing works:

A scam artist sends an e-mail, which is designed to look like it came from a reputable company such as a bank, financial institution, or retailer like Amazon.com, but is in fact a forgery. These e-mails direct you to a website that looks remarkably similar to the reputable company's website, where you are asked to provide account information such as your e-mail address and password. Since that web site is actually controlled by the phisher, they get the information you entered.

Go to amazon.com/phish to read more about ways to protect yourself from phishing.

To regain access to your Amazon customer account:

1. Go to Amazon.com and click the "Your Account" link at the top of our website.

2. Click the link that says "Forgot your password?"

3. Follow the instructions to set a new password for your account.

Please choose a new password and do not use the same password you used with us previously.

Thank you for your interest in Amazon.com

Sincerely,

Amazon.com

Please note: this e-mail was sent from an address that cannot accept incoming e-mail. To contact us about an unrelated issue, please visit the Help section of our website.

Facebook Warns Users with Fake and Multiple Accounts

Many Facebook users have reported receiving pop up messages that advise them that the social network has detected they are using multiple accounts.

Warning: Our Systems Detected You Have Multiple Accounts
It looks like you have more than one account on Facebook. Facebook is a community where people use their real identities so you always know who you’re connecting with. Maintaining multiple accounts is a violation of our Terms and could result in all of your accounts being disabled. Please remove this account and help us keep Facebook safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Some users complained and were worried about the warning because there are those who received the message who only have one account and do not use fake and multiple accounts on Facebook.

Apparently and based on reports by Facecrooks, Facebook is currently testing a system that gives warning to users who have opened multiple accounts. The social networking giant, however, says that they are still working on this system to be more accurate and they are only notifying possible violators. Facebook also says they are not taking any action on violators for the time being "so there’s no need for anyone to worry".

Facebook May Block Users Using Fake and Multiple Accounts
Nevertheless, it is a violation of Facebook's terms of service to use fake names and operate multiple accounts. Those who maintain fake and multiple Facebook accounts will likely have their accounts blocked or removed once the social network adopts stricter measures to deal with violators. Removal of fake and multiple accounts may be done by Facebook to combat spam and malicious activities perpetrated by fake Facebook users.

What to Do if You Have Multiple Facebook Accounts

1. Delete old and unused Facebook accounts that you have. Make sure to inform your friends in your old account that you will be merging all your contacts and activities in one Facebook account. If you do not want to lose posts and comments in your old account, you may want to download a copy of your Facebook data.

To do this, go to Account --> Account Settings and click "Download a copy of your Facebook data".

download my facebook data

2. If you maintain a different account to manage a Facebook page, you may want to edit "admin roles" and add your Facebook account with the same admin roles and privileges.

3. Tell your friends to do something about their multiple Facebook accounts ASAP. Share this post on Facebook.

Crimestoppers ATM PIN Reversal Hoax

The ATM PIN reversal hoax is gaining momentum in the social networking site Facebook. This hoax was originally spread through emails and is now making its rounds as tagged images in Facebook. It claims you simply have to key in your personal identification number (PIN) or atm password backwards in case of a robbery to call the attention of the authorities and police will be dispatched to the location of the crime.

The Hoax
ATM PIN Number Reversal - Good to Know!!

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse.

For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. The ATM system recognizes  that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the  machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown  to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to the location. All ATM’s carry this emergency sequencer by law.

This information was recently broadcast on by Crime Stoppers however it is seldom used because people just don't know about it.

Please pass this along to everyone.

This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it on to your family and friends.

The Truth

This could have been an ingenious way of protecting ATM users from robbers. Unfortunately, this atm feature does not exist yet. The hoax message gives false hopes to ATM users that they can call the police in case of robbery situations. Crimestoppers already denied that the email and the supposed details about the ATM panic code originated from them.  Read the official  statement of Crimestoppers here.

What to Do if You Received the ATM PIN Reversal Hoax

  • If you were tagged in an image that contains this hoax, untag yourself.

  • Report the image by clicking the x mark beside it.

  • Inform your tagger and your friends that this is a hoax by sharing this post on Facebook.

We hope that this article will also equip you with helpful facts and tips so you can better secure your FB account from rogue applications that can potentially download viruses and malicious files into your PC.

Facebook virus links

Facebook Viruses Don't Exist
The paranoia among some people about getting Facebook viruses can be attributed to viral Facebook virus spam messages that warn about malwares spreading in the social network. Technically, so far, however, there is no such thing as a Facebook virus. Clicking on malicious links spread via chat or wall post WON'T INFECT YOUR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT.

"Something is posting spam in my Facebook and sends chat without my knowing, isn't this a Facebook virus?"

Facebook viruses technically do not exist as pointed out earlier. When people say Facebool viruses, they likely refer to clickjacking scams, rogue apps, hoax messages and facebook chat spam. A clickjacking scam automates posting of spammy messages in your wall. Clickjacking scams are usually characterized by what appear to be videos, images and articles of controversial nature that can potentially arouse curiosity. These messages often come with links that direct to third party sites and pages. These landing pages typically have survey tests or prompt users to install or download a potentially malicious toolbar or application. Your account sends out or posts messages "without your consent" not because you have a virus but more likely because you have installed an application you agreed to post in your behalf.

But you can get computer virus through Facebook!

This happens when you click message or video links on Facebook that actually direct you to pages outside of Facebook. These sites or pages may host malicious files or prompt you to download files that are bundled with viruses and malwares.

How to Secure Your Facebook Account
THINK TWICE BEFORE CLICKING LINKS OR INSTALLING APPS. Always be cautious when clicking any links you see in Facebook. Links spread on Facebook may redirect you to pages where you are bombarded by ads, survey scams or prompt you to install or download malwares. If you account is already compromised, you may want to read this post on facebook virus removal as it provides step by step guide on how to remove facebook virus.

Facebook Timeline Plus Scam

"Facebook timeline plus" is supposedly a Facebook application that promises to allow you to see who's viewing your timeline (statistics) and provide you with an advance privacy settings  through which you can go private or reveal

who hides as offline in your chatbox. The timeline plus app also claims to allow you to change your timeline color and theme  via new timeline plus designs and color palettes.

Cool!!! This is the best update Facebook has ever made! You can now Design your own Timeline! Easy to use Timeline designer on TIMELINE PLUS Try it here>>>

Facebook Timeline Plus Scam

While many Facebook users clearly want to have these features added to the functionality of their accounts, it is clear that the app is another hoax. Facebook has not rolled out viewer statistics, advance privacy settings and new timeline color palette features and even if they plan to do so in the future, Facebook itself will give the official announcement just as they did when they acquired instagram earlier this week.

Otherwise, the app will likely use your account to spam your friends and tag them with photos that will lure more to use this rogue Facebook app.

Hey, do you remember this photo?
Can you remember this photo?

Have you received messages or variations of the messages above? Scammers are spreading malicious links on Facebook via chat, wall post and messages by using catchy phrases that ask you to view a supposed photo of you. Unfortunately, the link where you are supposed to see your image do not actually lead you to the url of your picture but to a malicious website.

Facebook Phishing Scam

"Hey, Do You Remember this Photo?" links, in particular, are known to direct you to a site that may appear to be the Facebook login page. This is, however, a phishing attempt. Phishing is a way of trying to steal information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by using fake emails and websites that appear to be from or by legitimate and trustworthy entities.

If you do not scrutinize the url in the address bar, the fake facebook login page can easily fool you into believing you are still on Facebook's pages. See how a fake Facebook login page looks like:

Scams like this make it much easier for scammers to phish Facebook users' login credentials.

What to Do if You Fell to this Phishing Scam

1. Change your password immediately. You can do this by going to your account's settings page.
