Identify Gift Card and Voucher Scams on Facebook

If one of your Facebook friends is promoting a shopping voucher, give away or gift card, you might as well think first before clicking on the link because click-jacking scams  that promise to give away gift cards and vouchers abound online.

How to Identify Gift Card and Voucher Scams on Facebook

One way to identify gift card and voucher scams is to consider whether the offer is too good to be true. If it is, then it likely is a scam.  Googling for information about the offer can also help.

Things to Do when You See Fake Offers on Facebook

1. Ignore the message. The link will likely lead you to another page that may prompt you to answer survey ads or download malicious application.

2. If you think the offer is legitimate, make sure to use Google for to find further information and confirmation that the offer is legit.
3. If the offer turned out to be a fake, flag the message as spam by clicking the x mark button on the right side of the message.

4. Help keep your friends safe from gift card and voucher scams on Facebook by informing them about fake offers.

Below are some of the widely circulated fake gift card and voucher offers online:

Eat at McDonalds for Free

With thousands of branches and chains worldwide, McDonald's is undeniably one of the most popular, if not the most successful of the fast food restaurants worldwide. It is currently the world's largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants with presence in 119 countries serving approximately 68 million customers everyday.

Unfortunately, McDonald's popularity also have drawbacks since the iconic name has repetitively been used in spreading false humors and bogus offers in the social networking site Facebook. Together with such Starbucks, Best Buys and a number of popular other consumer brands, hoax news and fake offers from MacDonalds is often used to lure innocent people to answer surveys or provide their personal details to online scammers.

If you love the popular fastfood chain McDonalds, be sure not to fall to survey scams that distribute fake MCDonals meal vouchers to dupe facebookers into reposting the scam and answering surveys:

Eat at McDonalds for FREE! (limited time only)
McDonald’s is currently giving away free meal vouchers to all Facebook users!!
Walmart is giving away $1,000 gift cards

Wouldn’t it be nice if Walmart is giving away $1,000 gift cards by simply asking people to share or do rewards survey on Facebook? As good as this may sound, however, any messages you see in the social networks telling you of Walmart distributing gift cards for almost everyone is a hoax.

£250 Asda Shopping Voucher
Target $500 Gift Card Giveaway
Applebee's Gift Card
$500 Woolworths Voucher Scam

$500.00 Victoria Secret Gift Cards

One of these new scams appear to target ladies who may drool on the supposed Victoria’s secret merchandises that they dream of getting their hands to if they receive the supposed free gift cards on Facebook. By how the messages are reshared on Facebook, it appear that the gift cards are distributed by the popular lingerie brand for Facebook users.

Regal/AMC Movie Tickets
The biggest and most awaited movies of the year is hitting the cinemas this summer: The Avengers and the Men In Black 3, for example. Scammers, however, are also looking forward to the excitement generated by these movies since they have been using supposed free Regal/AMC movie tickets as bait to make people fall to survey scams.

Free Walgreens Gift Card

Scammers on Facebook keep luring and deceiving people to click the links they spread in the social network by making use of bogus give aways. Apparently the Christmas season and the coming new year make the Facebook give away scams perfect for making people visit survey scam sites or provide their personal information such as their emails and telephone numbers.

$25 Tim Hortons Gift Card

Costco Gift Card

Amazon.com Gift Card

Here’s the newer variation of the Outback gift caRd Facebook scam, a message that claims you’ll get free Tim Horton gift card/ coupon if you share the message on your wall and do some survey.

Free Cheese Factory Gift Cards

Free KFC Gift Card
Free KFC Gift Card Scam on Facebook

If you are rooting for a KFC lunch, don't trust the messages circulating in Facebook to give you free meals. Scammers are yet again distributing fake gift card messages in the social network the latest using the name of KFC. Here's the misleading messages being reshared by non suspecting Facebook users at the moment:
Get $100 KFC Gift Card (limited time only) CLICK HERE & CLAIM NOW
KFC is currently giving away $100 gift card to 10,000 lucky Facebook users!

KFC already denied the claims of this fraudulent give away via a statement in their Australian Facebook Page:
Hi all KFC Australia Fans,
We have had a number of questions and posts to the page regarding the $100 gift voucher offer currently being circulated on Facebook.
We can confirm that this is NOT an official offer and apologise for any inconvenience that this may have caused. If you have installed an application or connected the offer to your account we would advise you remove it immediately. Thank you.

If you wonder why bogus vouchers and gift cards are getting rampant on Facebook, scammers actually earn money whenever people answer surveys that they prompt whenever links to these misleading gift cards are clicked. Do not fall to these give away scams on Facebook.

Free $100 McDonald’s Gift Card for Mother’s Day

Sharing to mothers in your network a message on Facebook that promises to give free $100 McDonald’s gift card for Mother’s Day isn't really a nice way of saying Happy Mother's day to your mom friends because this is a scam. If you're a mom, don't get duped into believing MCDonalds is giving away giftcards for you today because this is not true.

$1000 Visa Gift Card

The link will ask you to answer surveys supposedly to determine whether you are qualified for the visa gift card.
Eat for Free at Pizza Hut

After the the Starbucks voucher scam and the free $250 Outback Steakhouse gift card scam, another bogus offer is yet circulating on Facebook.  This time, the message says you can eat for free at the popular pizza restaurant Pizza Hut if you share or repost the message and its link, leave a comment and provide the information you are asked for.

Facebook will end on January 15th 2013: The Truth

Facebook closingAnother Facebook closing down news is taking rounds: Facebook will end on January 15th 2013.
FACEBOOK WILL END ON JANUARY 15TH, 2013!

ALO ALTO, CA – Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in January. Managing the site has become too stressful.

“Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”

The news is spread by Weeklyworldnews.com, a site known for distributing fanciful stories disguised as news articles. Other stories published by Weekly World News are alien stories and other otherworldly and tabloid stories.

The news of social networking giant Facebook shutting down is not new. People, for example, have spread news about Facebook closing down on March 15, 2011 and then July 2012 but the close down never happened because the claims are not true.

How to Play with Other SimCity Social Players without Compromising Your Privacy

The much awaited SimCity update has arrived and it's on Facebook. What makes SimCity social more enjoyable and more addictive is you actually get to play with friends. With the Simcity championships, you also get to compete with other players. Nonetheless, completing some quests, building attractions, factories and businesses, and expanding your land area require that you have plenty of friends who can send you collectibles and land permits.  If you only have a few friends and you can't wait to build new buildings or complete quests, you might be tempted to add Simcity social players that you do not personally know of and who are similarly looking for simcity players that they can also play with.

Where to Find Simcity Social Players
If you consider to do add people you do not personally know of so you can play simcity social, you can easily find people asking you to add them up and play with them on the simcity social official forum and fan page.

Remember to:

  • Carefully choose who to add. When adding people, check their profile and try to get a gauge if they really are simcity players and if they are safe enough to add up.

  • Introduce yourself when adding people up. "I'm a simcity player and I am looking for people to play with" will do.

Protecting Your Privacy
Make sure to limit these people's access to information you post on Facebook. To do this:

  • Add simcity social players to the Restricted friend's list. People on this list can only see posts and profile information you have decided to make public.

  • Check your Privacy settings-->Control Your Default Privacy and make sure that your default post is only visible to friends. You may also want to

  • Update your chat privacy settings. Go to chat sidebar-->Advanced chat settings. Under "All your friends see you except", add Restricted list.

  • Make sure to review the people you have add up regularly and remove spammy and suspicious friends.

In worst cases, these information may even get into the hands of identity thieves who may use the details for their own advantage.

Your Amazon.com Password has Been Changed Email: Did It Come from Amazon?
Did you receive a message that says Amazon.com changed your password? If yes, you can verify if the email is real by trying to log into your Amazon account. Make sure that you do not click on the link that is attached to your email. Instead, go to your browser and type in the Amazon's url.

If you find that the claims of the email is false and you have likely received a phishing email, make sure to mark the email message as spam. Below is how you do it if you are using gmail:

Your Amazon.com Password has Been Changed Email: Did It Come from Amazon?

This is an important message from Amazon.com

As a precaution, we've reset your Amazon.com password because you may have been subject to a "phishing" scam.

Here's how phishing works:

A scam artist sends an e-mail, which is designed to look like it came from a reputable company such as a bank, financial institution, or retailer like Amazon.com, but is in fact a forgery. These e-mails direct you to a website that looks remarkably similar to the reputable company's website, where you are asked to provide account information such as your e-mail address and password. Since that web site is actually controlled by the phisher, they get the information you entered.

Go to amazon.com/phish to read more about ways to protect yourself from phishing.

To regain access to your Amazon customer account:

1. Go to Amazon.com and click the "Your Account" link at the top of our website.

2. Click the link that says "Forgot your password?"

3. Follow the instructions to set a new password for your account.

Please choose a new password and do not use the same password you used with us previously.

Thank you for your interest in Amazon.com

Sincerely,

Facebook Warns Users with Fake and Multiple Accounts

Many Facebook users have reported receiving pop up messages that advise them that the social network has detected they are using multiple accounts.

Warning: Our Systems Detected You Have Multiple Accounts
It looks like you have more than one account on Facebook. Facebook is a community where people use their real identities so you always know who you’re connecting with. Maintaining multiple accounts is a violation of our Terms and could result in all of your accounts being disabled. Please remove this account and help us keep Facebook safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Some users complained and were worried about the warning because there are those who received the message who only have one account and do not use fake and multiple accounts on Facebook.

Apparently and based on reports by Facecrooks, Facebook is currently testing a system that gives warning to users who have opened multiple accounts. The social networking giant, however, says that they are still working on this system to be more accurate and they are only notifying possible violators. Facebook also says they are not taking any action on violators for the time being "so there’s no need for anyone to worry".

Facebook May Block Users Using Fake and Multiple Accounts
Nevertheless, it is a violation of Facebook's terms of service to use fake names and operate multiple accounts. Those who maintain fake and multiple Facebook accounts will likely have their accounts blocked or removed once the social network adopts stricter measures to deal with violators. Removal of fake and multiple accounts may be done by Facebook to combat spam and malicious activities perpetrated by fake Facebook users.

What to Do if You Have Multiple Facebook Accounts

1. Delete old and unused Facebook accounts that you have. Make sure to inform your friends in your old account that you will be merging all your contacts and activities in one Facebook account. If you do not want to lose posts and comments in your old account, you may want to download a copy of your Facebook data.

To do this, go to Account --> Account Settings and click "Download a copy of your Facebook data".

download my facebook data

2. If you maintain a different account to manage a Facebook page, you may want to edit "admin roles" and add your Facebook account with the same admin roles and privileges.

3. Tell your friends to do something about their multiple Facebook accounts ASAP. Share this post on Facebook.

Crimestoppers ATM PIN Reversal Hoax

The ATM PIN reversal hoax is gaining momentum in the social networking site Facebook. This hoax was originally spread through emails and is now making its rounds as tagged images in Facebook. It claims you simply have to key in your personal identification number (PIN) or atm password backwards in case of a robbery to call the attention of the authorities and police will be dispatched to the location of the crime.

The Hoax
ATM PIN Number Reversal - Good to Know!!

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse.

For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. The ATM system recognizes  that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the  machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown  to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to the location. All ATM’s carry this emergency sequencer by law.

This information was recently broadcast on by Crime Stoppers however it is seldom used because people just don't know about it.

Please pass this along to everyone.

This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it on to your family and friends.

The Truth

This could have been an ingenious way of protecting ATM users from robbers. Unfortunately, this atm feature does not exist yet. The hoax message gives false hopes to ATM users that they can call the police in case of robbery situations. Crimestoppers already denied that the email and the supposed details about the ATM panic code originated from them.  Read the official  statement of Crimestoppers here.

  • Report the image by clicking the x mark beside it.
